East Zorra-Tavistock is a township in southwestern Ontario, Canada, formed on 1 January 1975 through the amalgamation of the Township of East Zorra and the Village of Tavistock. It is part of Oxford County. The township had a population of 6,836 in the Canada 2011 Census.

One of the most common asked questions we are asked is whether moving is tax deductible. This is great question. Please be advised that Revenue Canada will have the last say and we are by no means qualified to provide taxation information. However, as an example, let’s say you move from Brampton to Oshawa because of a new job, that would most likely be tax deductible. As a general rule, your must have commenced work or carried on a business at your new location. Also, your new residence must be at least forty kilometers closer to your new place of business or job . This applies to moves across the city, province or country.

Some of the eligible moving expenses include the following:

Travel expenses incurred in connection with your move

The cost of transporting your household goods

The cost of meals and temporary accommodation not exceeding fifteen days

Costs associated with selling your old residence

The cost of breaking your lease

Legal fees and land transfer taxes paid in connection with the purchase of the new residence

You cannot claim any loss incurred on the sale of your former residence

If your moving expenses have been paid by your employer, you will not be entitled to claiming this yourself. If your employer pays or reimburses you for part of the moving expenses, you may be able to deduct all of your eligible moving expenses, but must report the amounts pad by your employer as income. Eligible expenses are only deductible from your income earned at the new location. Amounts not deducted in the year of the move may be carried forward to the next year.

If your employer reimburses you for a loss incurred on the sale of your former residence, the amount is not normally required to be included in income.

If you are a student, you can also claim moving expenses if you move to begin a job (including a summer job) or to start a business. If you move to attend a full time post-secondary institution, you can deduct the expenses, but only to the extent of your scholarship or research grant income.
